Learn more about MacAulay

MacAulay’s easy access to I-77, as well as convenient location to great shops, restaurants, golf courses, Lake Norman, and schools is a huge benefit of living here. The large wooded parks, waterfalls, ponds, and open spaces within the development offer great opportunities for outdoor activities and escapes from daily stressors. The small, narrow streets can be a bit of a pain, but they do create an inviting, comfortable neighborhood feel.

History:MacAulay was built in the early 2000’s as one of Huntersville’s largest communities. It was named after famed child actor Macaulay Culkin, known best for his roles in the “Home Alone” movies, as well as “Uncle Buck.” Rumor has it that Culkin got into serious gambling debt 20 years ago and had to sell his naming rights to the developers of this community in order to pay off several notorious gangsters from Atlantic City and Beijing. This of course is entirely false. None of this isn’t true except for the fact that MacAulay was built in the early 2000’s and was designed to be a very family friendly community.

Housing Prices(at time of video):At the time of this post (October 2017), the median sales price for homes in MacAulay is $350,000 with an average square foot price of over $118. There is a very wide selection of home sizes, lot sizes, floorplans, and price points in MacAulay, one of the benefits of living in such a large community.

Restaurants & Shopping: La Unica Mexican Restaurant is going to be the closest restaurant to MacAulay and if you like Mexican beer, they have a good selection! MacAulay is also conveniently located near Birkdale Village which has a ton of shopping opportunities and is home to such bars and restaurants as: Dressler’s, Eez Fusion Sushi, Bad Daddy’s Burger Bar, Brixx Wood Fired Pizza, Midwood Smokehouse, Corkscrew Shoppe & Bar, and more. There are simply way too many restaurants located within 10 minutes of MacAulay to list them all.

Activities and Exercise:A jog or walk around the neighborhood in this large, wooded community is part of daily life. The community swimming pool, tennis courts, playgrounds, and parks are great options for family fun and exercise, but if you’re looking for more intense workouts then most of your commercial gyms will be on Gilead Road just off of Exit 23. There are a few places just north of MacAulay near Birkdale as well, but the larger Cross Fit and Anytime Fitness types of gyms are on Gilead. I can’t forget to mention that the U.S. National Whitewater Center is only about 20 minutes away. This is a great family friendly place for biking, hiking, zip lining, kayaking, rafting, or just eating and watching all the activities.

Schools: Grand Oak Elementary School.  Francis Bradley Middle School. Hopewell High School. A number of charter and private schools are also close.

Favorite Space:Many people like the pond/fountain open space behind the swimming pool and tennis courts, but my favorite spot has to be the waterfall park just off the main entrance. It costs the HOA a lot of time and money to maintain, but it’s definitely worth it!

Favorite Local Grocery Store:Harris Teeter and Publix Super Market are your closest grocery stores for your “everyday” shopping. There is a Whole Foods just east of Birkdale Village and an Earth Fare just south of Gilead near I-77.

Favorite Coffee Shop:This depends on your time, budget, and tastes because just about every type of coffee shop you can imagine is located within 5-15 minutes of MacAulay. If you have some time, a lot of locals like to hang out at one of the Waterbean Coffee shops in the area.

Favorite Restaurant:Dana and I LOVE to eat out, so this list is quite extensive…too extensive to post here. However, if you’re looking for a pretty good margarita/Mexican beer selection and decent Mexican food, check out La Unica just up the road on Northcross Drive. Famous Toastery is a good place for breakfast food, and that’s just down on Gilead Rd. We also like Jet’s Pizza which is also in the area and delivers.
