Learn more about Birkdale

Located just off I77 at exit 25, Birkdale Village’s “main street setting” has become the de facto downtown of Huntersville…which the real downtown is located about 4 miles east of here. The village boasts over 60 local and national branded retail shops, approximately 10 restaurants and a few fun spots to grab a drink and cigar. Oh yeah, a 16-screen movie theater sits at the end of Birkdale Village’s “Main Street.”

HistoryBirkdale Village was built in the early 2000’s on 52 acres of horse pasture that quickly transformed sleepy little Huntersville into a thriving regional destination. Birkdale Village earned international recognition as the best mixed-use development in America when it won the 2003 Pillars of Industry Award from the National Association of Home Builders and then the Innovative Design and Construction category of the International Design and Development Awards in 2004. Birkdale Village has had a heavy influence on several other similar projects nationwide.

Housing Prices(at time of video):At the time of this post (July 2018), the average sales price for homes in Birkdale/Birkdale Village was $393,000 with an average square foot price of $145. There is a very wide selection of home sizes, lot sizes, floorplans, and price points in Birkdale and Birkdale Village, one of the benefits of living in such a large community.

Restaurants & Shopping: As mentioned above, there are over 60 local, regional, and nationally branded shops to choose from within the village, as well as, a countless number within a one to ten-minute walk/drive just outside the village. As for restaurants, well, there are about 10 located within Birkdale Village, and then dozens more located within 5 minutes. Birkdale really is the “ground zero” of economic development along the southeast side of Lake Norman.

Activities and Exercise:A jog or walk around the village and through Birkdale’s wide, sidewalk-lined streets is part of daily life. The community swimming pool, playgrounds, movie theater, public golf course, and parks are great options for family fun and exercise. There are also several exercise facilities located just up Catawba Avenue that are fitted with enough equipment to guarantee a quality workout. Huntersville is also working on developing a 12 mile bike path that will start just behind Birkdale Village and end near downtown Huntersville…look for that before the year 2020!  The U.S. National Whitewater Center is only about 20 minutes away and is a great family friendly place for biking, hiking, zip lining, kayaking, rafting, or just eating and watching all the activities.

Schools: Grand Oak Elementary School.  Francis Bradley Middle School. William Amos Hough High School. A number of charter and private schools are also close.

Favorite Space:Main Street…all up and down this quaint setting. The Village uses this space for outdoor concerts, festivals, and other community gatherings. When nothing special is planned, it’s a great place to just hangout and people watch.

Favorite Local Grocery Store:Harris Teeter and Publix Super Market are your closest grocery stores for your “everyday” shopping. There is a Whole Foods just east of Birkdale Village and a Fresh Market north on Catawba Avenue.

Favorite Coffee Shop:This depends on your time, budget, and tastes because just about every type of coffee shop you can imagine is located within 5-15 minutes of Birkdale/Birkdale Village. If you have some time, a lot of locals like to hang out at one of the two Waterbean Coffee shops in the area (Northcross Shopping Center…and Jetton Rd and West Catawba, but Starbucks inside the village is also a popular place to meet people.

Favorite Restaurant:Dana and I LOVE to eat out, so this list is quite extensive…too extensive to post here. However, we really like Bonefish Grill, eeZ Fusion & Sushi, the Galway Hooker, Dressler’s (a little more upscale), and Hickory Tavern. There really are too many restaurants in the immediate area to mention! Well OK, we’ll mention one more…Midwood Smokehouse is an awesome BBQ place located in the village.
